Pre-School Monthlies - Starfish Room

Ms. Chan & Ms. Williams

April 2008

Dear Starfish Parents,

Wow, March flew by!  Before you know it, June will be upon us.  This month we were visited by a rat, traveled to China, started on our garden, and had a visit by Teacher Carolyn’s mom.

The month started with a bang with a visit by Fritzie, Teacher CeCe’s pet rat.  We learned about what rats like to eat (people food!) and that they are nocturnal animals.  That would explain why Fritzie was sleeping most of the day, waking up only for lunch, specifically Hana’s lunch!  The Starfish also made their own pet rats out of construction paper and fabric.

After Fritzie’s visit, we decided we should visit China.  After all, it is the Year of the Rat!  The Starfish made a magic bus that flew us over to China.  There we learned to count to ten in mandarin and built our own Great Wall out of blocks.  We learned that kites came from China and made our own kites, which we took out to the ladybug field for test flights!  We also painted with traditional Chinese brushes, stones, and ink blocks.  We learned about Chinese fans and made our own fans using feathers.  We also did some cooking and made red bean paste dumplings.

This month, the Starfish also started on our garden.  We planted basil, cilantro, and all kinds of flower seeds.  Thank you to the parents who brought seeds in for the class.

March ended with a visit from Teacher Carolyn’s mom.  She brought her guitar and led a singing circle.  The Starfish were introduced to two new songs, “Johnny Schmoker” and “Mi Chacra.”

In all, it has been a busy month.  Next month, we continue our trip around the world with visits from our parents.  We can’t wait!
